How to send money to Cameroon, step by step

The whole process happens in the app. These steps cover a first transfer to a new recipient.

  1. Open your MAJORITY account. You need a government-issued ID. A US Social Security number is not required.
  2. Tap Send money and select Cameroon. The app shows the mobile wallet option, which is the delivery method available on this destination.
  3. Enter your recipient's details. You need the phone number registered to their MTN MoMo or Orange Money account, and their name as it appears on that account.
  4. Enter the amount in US dollars. The app converts it and shows the XAF total your recipient will receive, along with our competitive exchange rate.
  5. Review the summary screen and confirm. The XAF amount, the exchange rate, and the estimated delivery time are all shown before you confirm.

Getting your recipient's details right

Most held transfers to Cameroon come from a details mismatch rather than anything to do with the money, so it is worth a message to your recipient before you start.

  • The phone number has to be the one registered to the wallet. A number your recipient uses for calls is not always the number attached to their MTN MoMo or Orange Money account.
  • The name has to match the wallet account. A spelling difference can hold the transfer until it is resolved, so confirm the exact spelling rather than assuming it.
  • The account has to be in your recipient's own name. A wallet belonging to a relative or a neighbour will not clear.

What your recipient receives

Your recipient receives Central African CFA francs (XAF) directly into their MTN MoMo or Orange Money account. They do not need to visit a location, present a document, or convert anything after it arrives. The XAF figure shown on your summary screen before you confirm is the amount that reaches their wallet.

Cash pickup is not available on the Cameroon destination, and neither is bank transfer. Mobile wallet is the delivery method for this destination.

How to send money to Cameroon on WhatsApp

The send happens in a conversation rather than on a screen. You open the chat, say how much you want to send, and enter the phone number registered to your recipient's mobile wallet when the chat asks for it.

Your recipient needs an active MTN MoMo account, or an Orange Money account, in their own name. The number has to be the one registered to that wallet rather than any number they use, and the name has to match the account, so both are worth confirming before you start.

Before anything is charged you see the XAF amount your recipient will receive, the exchange rate, any fee, and the estimated delivery time. With a MAJORITY membership, you pay a $0 MAJORITY transfer fee. Without a paid monthly membership, sending on WhatsApp is $1.99 per transfer.
